Motivation & Objectives:

Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) emission is a reporter of photochemistry and functional mechanisms of thylakoids and widely being used to understand the photosynthetic mechanisms in response of various biotic/abiotic stress factors. Recently, we have reported its applicability for screening plants drought (Mishra & Iannacone et al, 2011) and cold (Knaupp et al., 2011; Mishra A. et al, 2011) tolerance. While screening cold tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana accessions we observed characteristic changes in ChlF transients during constant cooling of detached leaves below 0 °C (Mishra A. et al 2011). Therefore, we proposed this STSM to perform the experiments in order to understand the diagnostic value of modulations in ChlF transients in presence and absence of different inhibitors of the photosynthetic machinery such as DCMU [3-(3,4- Dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea], methyl viologen (MV) and nigericin (NG) at sub-zero temperatures.

Results

The results of the performed experiments during STSM are very interesting in understanding basic photosynthetic mechanisms in plants at sub-zero temperatures.

Future collaborations with the host: We are trying get funding from associated agencies in order to strengthen our scientific collaborations.

Acknowledgements:

I am grateful to the European COST project FA0605 for the financial support of my scientific stay in Stuttgart, Germany. The proposed STSM was successfully carried-out and the anticipated aims are achieved. I would like to give thank to the host and associated staff for their excellent assistance during my stay at Stuttgart, Germany.
