COST STSM reference   number: COST-STSM-FA0605-7394

COST applicant:  Maris Nuhkat  University of Tartu, Institute of Technology  Tartu, Estonia

Host: Prof. Rainer Hedrich/ Prof. Werner Kaiser Molecular Plant Physiology and Biophysics  University of Wuerzburg.  Wuerzburg, Germany

Title of the mission:   Ozone induced activation of S-type anion channels in guard   cells

Period of STSM:     13th December 2010 – 31st January 2011

I carried out my short term scientific mission in University of Wuerzburg, Germany. I was hosted by Dr. MRG Roelfsema of the department of Molecular Plant Physiology and Biophysics from the group of prof R. Hedrich. The aim of this STSM was to record stomatal responses to ozone in single cell level. Stomatal movements in response to ozone were registered under the microscope and photographed. Impalement with double-barreled intracellular microelectrodes was used to measure ozone induced changes in the activity of ion transport proteins in the guard cells. All of the recordings were carried out on intact plants.

During my short term scientific mission I learned to prepare microelectrodes, impale cells and carry out voltage clamp measurements, I also gained knowledge about the technique and equipment needed for electrophysiological recordings. For that, I would like to thank my excellent host Dr. MRG Roelfsema. I would also like to thank European COST project FA0605 for providing the financial support.
