COST-FA0605: Signaling control of stress tolerance and production of stress protective compounds in plants. ACRONYM: INPAS (International Network of Plant Abiotic Stress)

1. Summary of work to be allocated into a specific WG

I am working on leaf rolling resulted from drought. Our works are conducted on Ctenanthe setosa which is an unique model in the studies of leaf rolling. We found that there were some significant increases in some osmo-protectants concentrations such as proline and sugar. In addition, polyamine level also increased in this respect, the work is mostly integrated into WG4.

2. Links with other WG and/or Subgroups

The work can also linked with WG3.1, WG3.5 in order to characterize proteins and genes during leaf rolling occurred under drought stress.

3. Specific activities to be integrated into WG and/or Subgroups

WG4:  In our previous studies we found that polyamine levels increased during leaf rolling periods.

WG4.5. Physiological and biochemical characterization of PA metabolism in relevant crop plants (i.e. tomato and potato). Exploitation of knowledge gained in breeding and selection of commercially valuable crop and tree species with improved adaptation to abiotic stress.

WG3.1 Dissection of stress-associated signalling cascades that control proline accumulation, and the synthesis of aspartate and glutamate-derived compounds using metabolomic and genomic approaches.

WG3.5Study of the expression of genes involved in the above mentioned metabolic processes and investigation of regulation of synthesis, stability and activity of specific proteins with chaperone-like functions.

4. Qualification for the role and current grants

Asim KADIOGLU is a Full Professor at the Department of Biology (Plant Physiology Unit) at the Faculty of Science and Letters, Karadeniz Technical University. He has more than 10 years of experience in studying the mechanism of leaf rolling in Ctenanthe setosa under drought stress and specifically the roles of osmolytes, hormones and hormones-like compounds and antioxidant molecules in plant responses to abiotic stresses. The work is currently financed by a national grants (TBAG-105T354).

5. Technical expertise and facilities

Example: This partner will provide determination of antioxidant enzyme activities, electrophoresis techniques, spectrophotometric and HPLC determinations of proline, Determination of proline and polyamine metabolic enzyme activities. The experience required for molecular biological techniques, including PCR, characterization of LP3 protein etc. The laboratory and Scientific Services of Karadeniz Technical University have the equipment and facilities to carry out the work allocated.
