1. Summary of work to be allocated into a specific WG

Our group is using a systems biology approach to study the function of polyamine metabolism in abiotic stress en model and crops species. Mostly activities are performing in Lotus spp species (physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology) but Arabidopsis, wheat, tobacco and rice are also included in our works. We have expertise in the evaluation of symbiotic microorganism roles (bacteria and VAM) in legume under saline stress and also in the polyamines functions in plant biotic stress. Ours aims are mostly integrated into WG4 (including transgenic lines in Lotus spp).

2. Links with other WG and/or Subgroups

Our tasks are also linked with WG1.6 and WG1.7 in order to study interactions with other signaling/metabolic pathways. Maybe, some topics of WG3 will also included in evaluations on Lotus spp species.

3. Specific activities to be integrated into WG and/or Subgroups

WG4: Our lab aims cover most aspects of this WG.

WG1.6: Study the roles of SnRK1/2 kinases in the regulation of polyamine metabolism.

WG1.7: Development of systems biology approaches for integration of polyamine metabolism in various stress signaling pathways.

4. Qualification for the role and current grants

Oscar A Ruiz is Associate Professor at the Biotechnology Department in IIB-INTECh in the San Martin University. He also is Researcher Member of the National Researching Council in Argentina CONICET). He has more than 20 years of experience in studying the plant physiology and biotechnology and in special the role of polyamines in plant biotic and abiotic stress responses. In addition, he studied the roles of the polyamines in the growth and differentiation of microorganism. The work of our lab is currently financed by three National grants (PICT 04 26517; PICT 2005-33397 and PIP CONICET 5740); grants from AECI (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional); CYTED (Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo) and CEE (LOTASSA- INCO-DEV Project).

5. Technical expertise and facilities

This partner will provide some expertise in plant physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. In particular, our lab has equipment required for determination of polyamines, determination of polyamine metabolic enzyme activities, and also for plant tissue and cell culture and molecular biological techniques.
